Import your design system from Storybook

Bring your own components into your library, next to your captures.

Your own design system is a source for your library, the same as your captures. Stele reads a Storybook build, adds each component and its stories as a folder in your library, and takes a picture of every story so you can inspect it like any other capture.

Start from Settings → Imports, under Your design system. Imports are part of Pro.

A published Storybook

Paste the address of a Storybook that is reachable from the internet. Stele shows what it found and what it will import before anything is written, and you choose the scope.

The build needs its components manifest. If the import says it is missing, turn on features.componentsManifest in your Storybook config and publish again, or use the command line route below.

A Storybook on your own machine

A Storybook on localhost or a private network cannot be reached from Stele’s servers, so it is imported from your machine instead. Nothing needs to be hosted and your Storybook config does not change.

  • Create a token in Settings → Access tokens.
  • Build your Storybook as you normally would.
  • Copy the command shown under “Or import from your own machine” and run it in your repository.
  • The tool finds the build, serves it locally, photographs each story, and uploads the result.

Disconnecting

Disconnecting a design system removes only the connection. Its components stay in your library and in search.
